Online GCSE Maths Tutor for Years 9–11

Helping GCSE Maths students move confidently from stuck grades to measurable progress through structured online tuition and exam-focused support.

If your child understands topics in lessons but underperforms in tests, struggles to move beyond a Grade 4, 5 or 6, or lacks confidence going into exams, this page will explain why that happens — and what can help them improve.

This online GCSE Maths tuition is designed for:

  • GCSE Maths students aiming for Grades 5–9
  • Higher Tier students who understand much of the content but continually underperform in tests

Why Students Can Struggle to Improve Their GCSE Maths Grade

Knowing how to complete individual topics does not always translate into higher test and exam results.

Students may understand a topic when it is being taught but struggle to recognise when to use that knowledge several weeks or months later. Others can answer straightforward questions but find it more difficult when a question combines different areas of Maths or presents familiar theory in an unfamiliar way.

Improving at GCSE Maths requires more than simply working through the syllabus topic by topic.

Students need to retain what they have learned, recognise which Maths is required in different situations and become comfortable applying their knowledge to exam-style questions.

This is why my tuition emphasises mathematical understanding with regular practice and as students progress, increasing exposure to past GCSE exam questions.

How the Tuition Works

The starting point is understanding where the student currently is and identifying the areas of Maths that need the most attention. We then work systematically on strengthening their GCSE knowledge and addressing gaps that may be preventing progress.

As students develop their mathematical knowledge, we begin to introduce exam questions from past papers. This helps them become familiar with how the theory they have learned is presented and tested in GCSE examinations. As students progress through Year 10, regular independent practice becomes increasingly important.

Students are encouraged to spend around 30 minutes each day working through exam-type questions, which have been selected from across the GCSE syllabus rather than focusing on a single topic. This "little and often" approach helps students retain previously studied topics while continually bringing different parts of the GCSE syllabus back into their working knowledge. Over time, the aim is for students to become less dependent on being told which topic a question is testing and more confident in deciding for themselves how to approach it.

What a Typical Lesson Looks Like

Each tuition session follows a structured format, although the lesson is adapted according to the needs of the individual student.

The first 5–10 minutes may be used to test theory from a recently studied topic. Times tables may also be tested where a student is not yet fluent with them.

We then review the homework from the previous lesson and clarify any questions the student was unable to complete.

The main part of the lesson is used to introduce a new topic or continue working on the current one, with worked examples and questions used to develop the student's understanding.

Homework is then set to be completed by the next session. Each appointment is one hour, consisting of 55 minutes of one-to-one Maths tuition followed by 5 minutes for me to complete lesson notes.

About Your Tutor

My name is Steve, and I have been privately tutoring secondary-school Maths since 2019. During that time, I have worked with more than 40 students across a wide range of abilities, helping them improve their mathematical understanding, confidence and exam performance.

Before becoming a private tutor, I spent five years working as a Maths and IT tutor in further education. My academic background is in Electronic and Electrical Engineering, and this combination of technical study and teaching experience has strongly influenced the structured and practical way I approach Maths tuition.

I work with students at different stages of their GCSE journey. Some need help filling gaps in their knowledge and building confidence, while others are already performing well and want to push towards Grades 7, 8 or 9. My approach is adapted according to the individual student, rather than following exactly the same programme with everyone.

I have supported around 19 students through to their GCSE Maths examinations. Among the results I know, students have achieved Grades 5 through to 8, including two Grade 8s and two Grade 7s. Individual students have made significant progress, including moving from Grade 5 to Grade 8, from around Grade 5–6 to Grade 7, and from approximately Grade 3 to Grade 5.

My aim is not simply to help students get through their next test. I want them to develop the mathematical knowledge, exam skills and working habits that allow them to make sustained progress throughout their GCSE course.

This provides parents with an ongoing picture of how their child is progressing without having to wait for a formal update. If I have any immediate concerns about a student's progress, homework or engagement, I will contact the parent directly.

Keeping Parents Informed

Parents have access to an online tutoring management system where they can see what was covered during each lesson, the homework that has been set, notes on their child's progress and what we plan to work on in the coming lessons.

Tuition Fees

Online GCSE Maths tuition costs £240 per month, paid monthly in advance. This includes one 55-minute one-to-one lesson each week, together with homework and additional practice between lessons where appropriate. Tuition is designed as regular, ongoing support rather than one-off or occasional lessons.
